‘Cut out mistakes and Spartans will have successful season’

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans goalkeeper Peter Jameson believes his side need to cut out the errors if they are to have a successful season.

Blyth lost 3-1 at Alfreton Town on Saturday making it one win and four points from the opening five games.

A Robbie Dale penalty cancelled out Tom Denton’s headed opener and then Dan Maguire hit the post.

It proved a turning point as two goals in as many minutes from Denton and Tom Platt put the game beyond Blyth. Jameson said: “It was a poor start going 1-0 down, then the lads did really well and we got ourselves back in it. I thought we’d come out in the second half and really kick on but we made two mistakes that both resulted in goals.”

Spartans have come up against big forwards in the last two games, and while they got away with a draw at Darlington, there was no escape in Derbyshire.

“It’s very difficult for the defence to cope with the big lads because they’re just a nuisance, but we dealt with them well in the opening 45 minutes.

“But then Aaron Cunningham had to go off and it kind of changed the game. It was two mistakes, we have to do better.”

Blyth are down to one fit centrehalf, Nathan Buddle, with Hartlepool loanee Cunningham picking up an injury at the Impact Arena.

“We’re having no luck whatsoever in the central defender department,” said manager Alun Armstrong, “and Cunningham hasn’t been back long from suspension.”

Blyth host leaders Chorley and then travel to York City, who yesterday sacked manager Martin Gray, this bank holiday weekend.
