Make a date for dinner with the Earl

-

ANY chance to climb Grey’s Monument in Newcastle is always snapped up because the city landmark is only open to visitors on limited occasions.

So combining a tour with a dining experience at one of the city’s favourite bar-restaurants was always going to prove a double-winner.

The launch of a Dinner With The Earl offer, which includes a visit to the monument and a meal at The Botanist next to it, generated so much interest that another announced date - for September 24 - is pretty much guaranteed to sell out fast.

Diners at The Botanist already have a bird’s eye view of the monument from the venue’s picture windows but the deal offers them a chance to go one better and see the city view from the Earl’s perspective.

They can climb to the top of the Monument - but, take note, there are 164 steps up - and enjoy views of the city centre’s Georgian architecture, Newcastle Castle, Newcastle Civic Centre, St James’ Park and beyond.

They will also get to hear about the history of the monument and the story of the former 1830s Prime Minister who, besides his work on the 1832 Reform Act, inspired a local tea blend.

Guests can then enjoy a Moet Champagne reception at The Botanist before sitting down to a three-course set meal which includes choices such as Scotch egg or courgette, kale and potato soup starters; fish and chips; harissa aubergine steak or its popular ‘hanging kebabs’ for mains, and sticky toffee pudding or banana doughnut for dessert.

There are three time slots available on the day: a 6pm tour with a 6.30pm dinner; 6.30pm tour with dinner at 7pm, and a 7pm tour with 7.30pm dinner. No children aged under five are allowed.

Tickets cost £40 and must be booked in advance.
