Defeat means no grand finale for Durham’s boys

-

DURHAM under-15s rounded off their season with a three-wicket defeat against Derbyshire at Denby Cricket Club, writes SAM BLACKLOCK.

Derbyshire won the toss and asked Durham to bat.

They lost Harry Crawshaw early but Oli Fletcher (36 in 81 balls) and Lucas Parry (35 in 61 balls) steadied the ship, leaving Durham 71-1.

Once both Parry and Fletcher departed, however, Durham struggled to 130-6 - eventually being bowled out for 148 in 42.2 overs.

Alex Haleem picked up 3-2 from 1.2 overs and Archie Clayton claimed 2-48.

Derbyshire made a positive start in reply, finding themselves 127-3 as Mitchell Wagstaff led the way with 75 from 135 balls.

However, seven wickets for 23 runs meant Derbyshire were bowled out for 158 with a lead of just 10 in 61.4 overs.

Durham’s struggles with the bat continued second innings.

Fletcher top-scored with an unbeaten 45 supported by 29 from Parry and 17 from Crawshaw but no other batsman managed double figures - setting Derbyshire a target of 136 to win.

Durham looked to have turned their fortunes around as Parry (3-29) and Thomas Russel (2-20) struck as the hosts struggled at 77-7.

However an unbeaten stand between Harry Whitworth (38) and Alex Haleem (15) saw them home in 39 overs to win by three wickets. ■■TYNEMOUTH claimed the Durham Cricket Board Under-15 League Shield with a five-wicket victory over Hetton Lyons.

The Lyons posted a reasonable total of 124, thanks mainly to Luke Husband who made 60 not out.

However, Tynemouth hit 125-5 in their reply despite Jack Scott taking three wickets for the Wearsiders.
