Six of the best as sharp-shooting Mags blunt Steel City

NEWCASTLE United won through to the first round of the League Cup after winning 6-1 at Steel City Wanderers in the Determinin­g Round.

An own goal after 17 minutes gave the Lady Mags the lead, when Jess Hennessy’s cross was headed in by a home defender.

Rhiannon Gray made it 2-0 before half-time.

Steel City’s Sarah Middleton headed home a corner after 52 minutes, but two minutes later Megan McKenzie made it 3-1 to Newcastle.

United captain Brooke Cochrane smashed home a fourth, before Ellen Turnbull, in her second match back since returning from over a year out through injury, came off the bench and scored twice to seal Newcastle’s path into the next round.

Chester-le-Street Town fell into the National League Plate draw after losing 4-2 at Guiseley.

The Premier Division side went ahead after ten minutes through Olivia Auker, with Ellie Olds soon adding a second.

Elizabeth Thompson-Clarke pulled a goal back on 18 minutes, but Auker restored the two goal lead after 32 minutes.

The battling visitors made it 3-2 at the break when Nichole Havery netted.

The Durham side searched for an equaliser, but with five minutes remaining Sophie Walton scored to make the tie safe.

The Durham side’s next match is the derby clash with Newcastle United at home on Tuesday.

Premier Division Sunderland eased past Northern Division Morecambe 5-0.

Emily Hutchinson and Keira Ramshaw put Sunderland 2-0 up ten minutes before the break.

Bridget Galloway added a third ten minutes into the second period before Louise Griffiths scored the fourth. Georgia Gibson completed the scoring.
