A SUSPECTED cannabis farm has been uncovered by a police raid.

Officers smashed their way into a house on Dean Terrace in Ryton, Gateshead.

There was shock for neighbours after officers descended on the property at about 5pm.

A man, who did not want to be identified, said he heard the moment the police forced their way in.

He said: “I was in the back and I heard a bang. It’s a real shock to me and I think it is for everyone on the street.”

Shattered glass could be seen outside the front door after officers had to break in. The curtains were drawn on both floors of the house and local residents said it was always this way.

A woman who lives on Dean Terrace was surprised to hear about what had happened.

She said: “I had the police round this morning and I told them I didn’t know anything about what’s been going on.

“I didn’t hear them (break through the door of the house) just now. I’m interested to find out what has happened. I’ve lived here a long, long time and it was a lovely street, but in the last few years we’ve had some deterioration.”

Two police vans were parked outside the house. Officers were still at the scene by 8pm.

One woman who lives on the street said: “It’s very unsettling you know. I think we probably know as much as you.

“There are families with young kids on this street and it makes you frightened for them.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “This afternoon (Wednesday), police uncovered a suspected cannabis farm at a property on Dean Terrace, Ryton.

“Officers are currently on the scene to carry out enquiries and a small cordon is in place at the address which should not cause disruption to local residents.”
