The most, and least, popular days to get hitched have been revealed
I F you’re currently engaged and thinking of getting married in late July, you might want to move quickly - new data has revealed it is one of the most popular times to tie the knot.
In fact, figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in particular, the last Saturday in July is the most popular day of the year to get married.
One in every 51 weddings that took place in 2015 (the latest figures available) was held on the 25th of July, or 4,810 in total. It was closely followed by August 1st, when 4,744 weddings took place. The fifth of September saw a further 4,706 couples say “I do”. All three of those dates were Saturdays, meaning it’s unlikely the date itself was most desirable, but rather the weekend of that time period. The closest Saturday to those dates for weddings in 2019 would be July 28th, August 4th, and September 7th.
And while you might expect it to be more popular, Christmas Day is in fact the day when fewest people get married in the UK.
Just three weddings were registered as having taken place on December 25th in 2015.
That could be because few people, such as catering staff and DJs, work on Christmas day - as well as couples not wishing to ask relatives and friends to give up arguably the most familycentred day of the year.
Similarly, while it’s supposed to be the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’ s Day saw just 1,969 couples tie the knot making it the 32nd most popular date to get wed.
Overall, Sunday was the most popular day of the week to get hitched (121,269) followed by Saturday (51,018), Friday (20,692) and Monday (12,529).
Less popular was Tuesday (12,137), Thursday (11,994) and Wednesday (11,874).
The figures include both heterosexual and same-sex weddings, though when looking at same-sex weddings alone, the 19th of September was most popular in 2015. In recent years, the number of weddings has been falling. With wedding planning website Hitched estimating that the average UK wedding now costs a whopping £27,161, perhaps it’s no surprise that weddings are becoming less popular. In fact, the 245,513 weddings that took place in 2015 was a drop of 34% compared to 50 years earlier in 1965, when there were 371,127 marriages.
