WOMEN’S FA CUP SECOND PRELIMINARY QUALIFYING RD
A STUNNING free-kick by an ex Sunderland player in the last minute of extra time gave Newcastle United a 3-2 win at Barnsley.
The all-Northern Division One clash saw the Tykes take a seventhminute lead through Lissa Woodhouse, who lobbed Grace Donnelly after being played in by Amy Woodruff.
After 18 minutes Megan McKenzie brought the scores level.
However, four minutes before the break, a fantastic strike from outside the box by Woodruff gave Barnsley a 2-1 advantage.
Six minutes into the second half the scores were level again when Abbey Joice, who signed from Sunderland in the close season, played a through ball to Jess Foster who fired in the equaliser.
A Steph Ord header came back off the post and United also had a shot cleared off the line.
Donnelly’s fingertips also denied Sophie Crosby scoring from a freekick as both sides looked for a winner in normal time.
An extra 30 minutes was required to separate the two sides, during which Ellen Packham went closest her shot hitting the post.
With penalties 60 seconds away, United won a free-kick on the edge of the area - and Joice stepped up and curled the ball around the wall, past the goalkeeper and into the net.
It was a third consecutive success for the Lady Mags, who are in cup action again on Sunday. Chorley provide the opposition in the first round of the National League Cup, the unbeaten league leaders winning 2-1 on their visit here three weeks ago.

Elizabeth Thompson-Clarke netted after 13 minutes but her effort was cancelled out soon afterwards by their Sheffield hosts.
However, Thompson-Clarke scored again before the break for a 2-1 advantage.
A dominant second period saw Thompson-Clarke complete her hat-trick after 52 minutes, Laura Hockaday on target six minutes later.
Sixty seconds later Nichole Havery netted before Hockaday notched her second two minutes later to make it 6-1.
Two goals in as many minutes before the end allowed Havery to complete her hat-trick.
