Plans for 89 new homes due to be considered

-

PLANS for a new housing estate on Tyneside could get the green light this week.

Avant Homes wants to build 89 homes in Sunniside village, Gateshead, despite concerns from some residents.

The proposals, which Gateshead Council ‘s planning committee will vote on tomorrow, would see a new housing estate - pictured above and comprising two to fivebedroom properties - built west of Pennyfine Road, a section of which was once used as part of the Douglas Brother fish business.

However, 16 nearby residents have lodged objections against the plans, with many saying that the development will result in the loss of valued green space and wildlife.

Another said: “Amenities in Sunniside village are already overstretched and the GP and local schools would not be able to cope.”

Concerns have also been raised about an increase in traffic around Sunniside.

The developer has said that estate, which it is expected would take three and a half years to build, will generate £48.2m for the Gateshead economy.

A planning application sent to the council states: “The proposed development will make a significant contribution towards the local economy and supports its sustained growth, including the support of circa 382 jobs, approximately £640,000 in New Homes Bonus to be spent by the council, approximately £675,000 spent in the local economy on making each house feel like, and over £550,000 in Community Infrastructure Levy contributions.

“The scheme has been designed to remain sympathetic to local design characteristics and site constraints, through careful consideration of house types and materials, provision of on-site open space, and consideration of the landscape and visual effects of the site in refining the layout and landscape scheme.”
