Man, 34, found seriously injured in city street
AN inquiry has been launched after a man was found with serious injuries near a nightclub in Newcastle city centre.
Officers were called to St Nicholas Street, near Tup Tup Palace, at around 6am on Wednesday, where the 34-year-old was discovered unconscious.
At this stage, it is not known how the man was injured but police say he could have been assaulted.
An appeal for witnesses has been made, urging anyone with information to come forward.
On Wednesday morning, a cordon remained in place between St Nicholas Building and the NBS site, where a police officer stood guard. People heading into work said they were surprised to see the area taped off.
One woman, who works in the area, said: “I was just on my way to my office when I saw a police van and a cordon behind it. I had no idea what had happened. I just assumed there may have been an incident last night, like a fight or an assault.”
A police spokesperson said: “At around 6am this morning, police received a report that a man had been found unconscious outside Tup Tup Palace on St Nicholas Street. The 34-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and he remains there in a critical but stable condition.
“Anyone who saw how the man was injured, or saw an altercation in the area concerned, should call police on 101 quoting log 113 10/10/18 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
