THE BIG FAMILY COOKING SHOWDOWN

BBC2, 7pm (times may vary)

ANOTHER cookery competition, but this one is for home cooks – so, perhaps the more laid-back relative to MasterChef or Great British Bake Off.

Angellica Bell, who won Celebrity MasterChef and has written family cook books, and Tommy Banks, Britain’s youngest ever Michelin-starred chef, team up to host and judge. They make an engaging duo.

Over three weeks, 16 foodie family teams battle it out. In each episode, the teams are given two tasks – one they have been able to practise at home, the other a complete surprise.

And the challenges are based on the realities of family cooking. So the first sees four families aiming to cook within a £10 budget.

OLD PEOPLE’S HOME FOR 4 YEAR OLDS

Channel 4, 9pm

WEEK three of the experiment at Lark Hill retirement home is all about memory, finding out whether the classmates can all remember one another’s name well enough to write them out on the blackboard.

They also visit a local maze, which is then re-created to scale on the nursery floor and everyone has to try to recall the way out.

Meanwhile new friendships start to blossom, as four-year-old Lily persuades 87-year-old Ken to swap his chips for her vegetables.

Later, when Lily celebrates her birthday, Ken is invited to meet her mum and dad for a family tea party: “You’ve no idea how proud this makes me, it’s really special,” says Ken.
