Why the Ford Ka could be your flexible friend

- By GRAHAM COURTNEY

THE Ford Ka is growing up. Remember the original Ford Ka with its steeply sloped, oval rear hatch? It was a 3-door city car and won loads of friends. The second generation moved things on and made the Ka slightly larger.

And now, we have the third generation which, again, is bigger and comes with five doors. It’s also gained a bit of attitude in the shape of the Ka+ Active which is actually a small SUV.

The Ka+ Active is slightly taller than the standard Ka+ thanks to a raised ride height. You also get sturdy bumpers, wheel arch extensions, chunky alloy wheels, additional exterior chrome trim and roof rails.

£11,095 gets you in the Ford Ka+ range, but you need to find £12,845 for the Ka+ Active. However, we think it’s worth it because it is likely to retain a decent chunk of its value.

In terms of engine choice you can pick from either a 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder, 84bhp petrol unit, or a 1.5 litre, 94bhp diesel engine. Both have a 5 speed gearbox as standard.

It’s the usual dilemma for buyers. If you want refinement, go for the petrol. If you want around 70mpg economy, go for the diesel. The petrol engine is the best bet unless you intend doing a high mileage or regularly travelling with a full load. The 1.2 petrol engine does a decent job. 0-60 takes about 13 seconds, top speed is 105mph, and you should easily manage close to 50mpg. In other words, the Ka+ Active will be happy trundling around town or nipping along the motorway.

Don’t be fooled by the small engines. This Ford Ka+ Active is good to drive, handles well, has a nice action to the gear lever, and soaks up lumps and bumps.

In terms of interior kit, the Ka+ Active comes with air conditioning, cruise control, powered front windows and door mirrors, and a smart colour infotainment screen which is a doddle to use.

This might be the smallest Ford on offer, but it’s surprisingly roomy. There’s plenty of space in the back for two adults, which also means it’ll be ideal family transportation.

If you need a car that will offer a mix of school run, commuting and holiday outing options, the Ford Ka+ Active will fit the bill.
