Laing time coming but Armstrong adds defender at last
BLYTH Spartans’ manager Alun Armstrong has finally got his man with central defender Louis Laing joining the club.
The former England youth international was released by Hartlepool United but has quickly found a new club.
Tynesider Laing was a regular for Pools during their first season in the National League but was out of favour this season.
The ex-Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Sunderland player has gone straight into Blyth’s squad for today’s FA Cup clash with York City.
While match fitness might be an issue, the 25-year-old’s arrival at Croft Park is a timely one with several defenders currently sidelined.
For Armstrong, the deal marks the conclusion of a prolonged pursuit for the centre-back.
He said: “Louis had to sort out his release from Hartlepool and there were other clubs interested in him.
“He is a high-calibre player who has played professionally in both England and Scotland and is a great signing.”
Laing has dropped down a division to play semi-professionally with Blyth and Armstrong admits he is playing below his ability.
He added: “He can play higher than Conference North.
“He has done in the past and no doubt will in the future.
“It is a move which suits both parties at this particular time. He got into a rut at Hartlepool and this is a fresh start for him.”
