THE A19 is the most dangerous road in the North East, according to new crash data.

There were a total of 132 incidents on the road in which at least one person was either hurt or killed in 2017.

Only one of those – on February 9 – was fatal, although 29 crashes saw people sustain serious injuries.

A total of 302 vehicles were involved in the 132 collisions on the A19 in the North East, and 209 people were hurt or killed.

The news emerged from analysis of nearly 130,000 crashes which took place on British roads during the year.

The data is published annually by the Department for Transport, which contains a breakdown for all A roads, B roads and motorways, with data for smaller roads aggregated.

The figures only include crashes which actually took place within the North East – even if the road in question goes on to other parts of the country. The second most dangerous road in our region was the A1, where there were 103 collisions where someone was hurt or killed.

Third was the A167 with 102 and fourth was the A189, with 88 casualtycausing collisions.

The A189 was the route with the highest number of fatal collisions in 2017, with three during the year.

There were a total of 57 fatal collisions on all roads in the region, including minor roads.

A further 4,032 collisions caused slight or serious injuries – an average of roughly 11 every day.

Across the UK as a whole, the most dangerous road was the A4, which runs from London to Bristol via Heathrow airport.

There were 705 casualty-causing collisions on the road during 2017.

The A23 (which runs from London to Brighton) was second with 668, and the A38 – also known as the Devon expressway – was third with 656.

The M25 was the most dangerous motorway, with 635 collisions in which someone was hurt or killed.

The A1 saw the most fatal incidents, with a total of 16 during the year. There were 15 on the A38 and 14 on the A6.
