NEWCASTLE United midfielder Dan Barlaser feels he is thriving on loan at League One high-fliers Accrington Stanley.

Barlaser joined Stanley alongside Magpies’ team-mate Luke Charman on an initial six-month loan deal and has helped his side up to fourth place in the League One table.

Stanley were promoted as champions of League Two last season and, despite having one of the smallest budgets in the division, they have found themselves right in the hunt for promotion places in League One.

The 21-year-old has made 10 appearances so far this season and, after a difficult spell on loan at Crewe last term, the talented midfielder admits he is enjoying his football again at Stanley.

He said: “The gaffer has given me a chance and seen my ability and what I can do, and I think I have helped the team when I have come in.

“We are forward-thinking, we have scored a few goals and I think with the way we are playing now and the position in the league we are in, a lot of teams are starting to see what we are capable of, as we have shown what we can do.

“If you look at what they achieved last season, and you look at how many times we have been beaten this season at home, I think it has only been once. It is not like I was going to walk into the team because it is a very good team. “They walked through League Two last season and won the league and they have carried that form on. “That is the good thing about being here - we are doing so well and there is that much competition for places

everyone is training very hard.

“That is why training is very good and we are playing well in games. We don’t want to give our shirts away to someone else – we all want to stay in the team and do well for the team.”

Barlaser, who has made three appearances for Newcastle’s first team, also praised the impact manager John Coleman has had on him so far this term.

He added: “I have had very experienced players behind me – I have Mark Hughes, whose played in the Premier League and is a very good defender, and I have been talking to Scott Brown a lot.

“He has been in the game a very long time and if I am stuck with anything positionally or for what to do in a scenario I will go and talk to Scott or the gaffer and they are always really helpful.

“It is like one big family, really – we have great characters and everyone sticks together. The best thing is everyone is enjoying it, so long may it continue.

“In the previous loan I learned how harsh football can be the lower you go down. I learned football can be harsh and that when you get your chance you need to take it. “John Coleman has given me a chance because he has seen what I can do and it has helped me a lot and hopefully the team a lot.”
