Dummett: We all need to stay United

- By ANDREW MUSGROVE Football writer andrew.musgrove@reachplc.com @ADMusgrove

NEWCASTLE United’s Paul Dummett believes there is only cause for concern at the club when everyone involved stops ‘sticking together.’

United lost 1-0 to Brighton at the weekend and became only the fourth side in top-flight history to lose their opening five home games and chalk up their worst start to in 120 years.

Unity was the key word last season when Rafa Benitez oversaw a similar run of poor form before leading his team to 10th – and it is that spirit Dummett wants to see again.

The Welsh international believes that sense of togetherness can be the remedy for United and drag his side off the foot of the table.

He said: “At any point of the season, when you are near the bottom of the league you need everybody pulling in the right direction.

“We need all the fans, staff and players working in the right direction to make sure we gain the results we need because if we are not all sticking together then that is when it becomes a problem.

“We have to carry on going, stick together, work hard in training and, when it comes to the next game, get the three points.”

Newcastle dominated the game against Brighton, having 27 shots on goal and bombarding the Seagulls’ box with countless crosses – but still remain without a point at St James’ Park.

Results over the weekend mean United lie three points from safety but Dummett wants to take the positives from the performance.

He added: “We cannot feel sorry for ourselves because it is a long old season.

“We are just a the start of the season now but a few wins can you take back closer to the team around you.

“We cannot feel sorry for ourselves, we need to keep on going and try and take the positives from a game like Brighton.

“It is tough to do that but we have to take the positives – like dominating the game from start to finish.”
