Heed Will be challenging at the top - Mike

- By JEFF BOWRON

FORMER Newcastle defender Mike Williamson believes Gateshead can continue to ply their trade at the right end of the table.

Saturday’s 3-0 win over Aldershot Town was the Heed’s sixth from their last seven games, seven of their last eight wins involving clean sheets.

Williamson has been on the winning side in six of his eight appearances for Gateshead, who tonight travel to AFC Fylde in the National League.

It is a top-seven six-pointer between sides with two of the best four defensive records in the division, Fylde conceding just seven goals.

They won 6-0 at ten-man Maidenhead at the weekend but were knocked out of the FA Cup by lowly Chesterfield in their last home game.

It is a massive week on the road for Gateshead, who have won their last five away games, with third-top Wrexham in wait on Saturday.

Williamson said: “We know we have a talented squad and as long as we can be consistent we have every chance of winning each game.

“Everyone likes to keep a clean sheet. We pride ourselves on that and we have goals in the team and all over the pitch as well.

“We are good away from home and can go into a tough period with a lot of confidence.

“We just have to make sure we do our jobs from one to 11.”

Gateshead should again be at full strength with fit-again Middlesbrough striker Luke Armstrong pressing for a recall.

Manager Steve Watson said: “Armstrong is so powerful.

“He gives the opposition so many headaches and he wants to play.”
