COUNCIL IN TALKS OVER MORE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES IN JESMOND

ON-STREET parking on more areas of Osborne Road could be banned.

Double yellow lines on the popular Jesmond avenue would also be extended under Newcastle City Council proposals.

Residents have already been consulted over the plans, which the council say are at an “initial stage.”

On Facebook, residents have largely welcomed the plans to address Jesmond’s “dreadful” parking situation.

A blueprint shows restrictions could come into play in the area at the north of the street, just off Jesmond Dene Road.

The street in the popular student area is already dotted with parking restrictions.

Councillors in the ward were set to hold an “informal” meeting over the plans yesterday.

However, members of Jesmond Resident’s Association’s Facebook page called for the council to do even more to ease the area’s parking woes.

One said on-street parking should be outlawed “everywhere.”

Another said they were “annoyed by those who park outside Waitrose, while others claimed people frequently park on the double yellows outside Starbucks.

Another added: “If the council truly believe it is only Osborne Road which has a problem with parking... we residents really have a serious uphill battle.”

The order would mean around 20 extra properties would be able to apply for parking permits.

Each address will be able to apply for a maximum of two permits. On Facebook, one resident wrote: “Limiting the number of passes may mean residents have a chance to park near their properties.”

A city council spokesperson said: “The plans are at an initial stage. “The scope of the restrictions being proposed is very limited and only applies to a very short section of the road.”
