Scott’s brace sees Benfield sail through

TWO goals from Scott McCarthy helped Newcastle Benfield into the third round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup with a 2-0 home win against Birtley Town.

The in-form forward scored a goal in each half as his side avoided a cup upset at Sam Smith’s Park.

Whickham couldn’t avoid a shock defeat as Scott Lowery’s first-half goal helped Tow Law Town to a 1-0 win over the Lang Jacks.

Ryhope CW needed penalties to see off Billingham Synthonia at Norton Sports Complex.

Kallum Hannah put Synners ahead three minutes before halftime, but they were pegged back by a Michael Rae equaliser.

The tie went to penalties and Ryhope held their nerve with a 4-3 win in the shoot-out.

Guisboroug­h Town beat Billingham Town 4-0 thanks to goals from Brian Close, Paul Young, Steven Roberts and Mason McNeill.

Bishop Auckland eased their way past Easington Colliery with a 6-1 win at Heritage Park. Striker Chris Winn led the way with two goals and Andy Johnson, Kieran Galbraith, Chris Salmon, Jamie Marshall also found the net for the Two-Blues.

Stockton Town were also comfortabl­e winners in their tie against Division Two strugglers Brandon United.

Max Craggs hit a brace and there was a goal apiece for Mikey Roberts, James Risbrough and Sonni Coleman in a 5-1 win for the Anchors.

A second-half goal from Anth Lee was all it took for Willington to progress against Northern League Division Two rivals Esh Winning.

Daniel Chapman hit a hat-trick to help Thornaby to a 4-1 win at Jarrow FC in the other all-Division Two tie.
