Players not affected by speculation

- By LEE RYDER Chief Newcastle writer

RAFA Benitez is confident Newcastle United’s political uncertainty will not hinder the club’s Premier League survival bid.

The Magpies moved out of the relegation zone and up to 17th thanks to their vital 1-0 win against Watford, but they still have plenty of work to do if they are to stay up.

However, Benitez feels his squad are in a good mindset and played down concerns about the impact of continued talk about a possible takeover and fan protests.

He said: “In terms of the atmosphere at the training ground – it is really good. The players train very well and in general we don’t have any big issues.

“Outside there is a little bit of noise but we are focused, we try to do our jobs as professionals. The players showed (against Watford) what they can do.”

Benitez’s side had failed to win any of their first 10 games before Saturday’s win at St James’ Park.

United still have a long way to go in their quest to remain in the top flight, with precious little separating sides at the bottom.

But the Spaniard feels his squad – most of which helped the Magpies to 10th last season – are certainly capable of survival.

He said: “I hope so, but for everybody it shows the team are capable to escape and compete.

“When you are in a better position in the table the players will have more confidence.

“During the week we spoke about the fans and how fantastic they had been during the season so far.

“I say that every game but when things have been so difficult you have to manage and the fans, you realise you need them. They were really, really good for the players.”

Benitez also feels the club are in a false position – speaking to Match of the Day he said United deserved more points when asked.

He went on: “I think so. Some of the games we deserved more.

“We were unlucky to miss the penalty at Cardiff and the penalty should have been given against Man United.

“Now we have three points and hopefully we can carry on against

Bournemouth.”
