Pop in for prosecco

- By BARBARA HODGSON

FIRST customers at Newcastle’s new pop-up festive bar can enjoy free prosecco and mulled wine when it opens its doors today.

Miracle on Grey Street – which is festooned with Christmas garlands and sparkling lights – is all set for its launch, and The Chronicle was invited for a sneak peek ahead of the big day.

The new bar, on the site of the former Living Room in Grey Street, will be here for six weeks only and is out to create as festive a setting as possible to ensure everyone is the Christmas mood.

And it will be helping to spread that goodwill during its opening event from 6pm-8pm today by serving free prosecco and mulled wine to the earliest arrivals.

Then, throughout the festive period, during which it will be open from noon until midnight, Miracle on Grey Street will be going all out to celebrate the season with a mix of Christmas music, such as favourite film soundtracks, and a festive drinks menu to be enjoyed with free nibbles against a backdrop of decorations, including Santa and his sleigh, tinsel, lights and a Christmas tree.

On offer will be a choice of “Naughty or Nice” cocktails served in bauble-like glasses or with a twist of tinsel on the stem, alongside mulled cider and mulled wine and, with a focus on local suppliers, the new tea-based whisky tipple from Newcastle company Noveltea.

Customers can also pop in for a winter-warming hot drink such a coffee with gingerbread syrup or hot chocolate with marshmallows.

The venue, adjacent to the Grey Street Hotel, has been standing empty since The Living Room closed its doors, so owner Malhotra Group thought a pop-up bar was the perfect idea to celebrate the season before the building is given a more permanent use.

And it’s in keeping with the early festive mood in Newcastle, which sees the city already geared up for Christmas with the launch of Fenwick’s Window; the Christmas Village at Times Square and Hadrian’s Tipi at Stack, plus the upcoming Christmas Market which is currently getting ready to open around the Monument tomorrow.
