Christians win to reach Trophy final

NORTH Shields Community Christians reached the final of the Andy Walker Trophy with a 2-1 victory over Saint Charles RC Church Gosforth at Druid Park.

North Shields took the game to Saint Charles early on and had chances to score, Saints’ goalkeeper pulling off two good saves.

The deadlock was broken on 21 minutes with Andrew Howes broke down the left wing and cut inside to slot the ball home.

Christians were the stronger in the first half but went in at the break 1-0 down.

However, after the resumption Michael Renny equalised for the North Tyneside outfit.

With the game in the balance, a deflection decided matters as Steven Thomson received the ball on the 18-yard line to shoot and score on 66 minutes.

Christians will face Consett Saint Patrick’s or Stockton Churches Portrack in the final.

Premier Division team Consett Saint Patrick’s defeated Division One outfit Morpeth Mighty Oaks 7-1 in the first round of the Memorial Cup.

The first goal came after 15 minutes from Peter Price.

Scott Somerville made it 2-0 five minutes later and Price then added his second.

Two goals in two minutes from Jack Malone and Daniel Fodden gave Saint Partick’s a 5-0 halftime lead.

Peter Price completed his hattrick after the hour, Josh Bell with a consolatio­n before Somerville nabbed his second.

In another Premier-Division One clash, Hillsong Newcastle were up against Heaton Saints.

Scott Hall give Hillsong the lead after 30 minutes, Heaton grabbing an equaliser before the hour through Stewart Patterson.

Ten minutes later Will Smith shocked Hillsong to give Saints the lead after 75 minutes.

Heaton soaked up a lot of late pressure from Hillsong Newcastle to cause a major first-round shock with their 2-1 result.

Jesmond Parish Church registered their first win of the season in the Premier Division, swapping places with Sunderland Samba at the bottom after beating the Warsiders 3-1.

Nathan Douglas, Tommy Watson and Ben Fothergill notched for Jesmond.
