the tunnel with air raid sound effects and the other half in the tunnel visitor centre at Lime Street in the Ouseburn, where an 87-year-old veteran of the war recounts his experiences of sheltering in the tunnel.
The quality of the school workshops was recognised in July, when the Victoria Tunnel education programme won a Sandford Award for heritage education.
The judges said: “The tunnel has been transformed into a learning experience based on academic research and the enthusiasm of the staff and guides responsible for its success.“
The unique acoustics of the tunnel are proving a draw for musicians in the region and further afield. Next year will feature a monthly array of talent ranging from jazz singers, cellists, and saxophonists.
Leading the way will be Steve Luck, who will premiere his new suite of music to evoke different aspects of winter, on Friday December 21 in complete darkness.
Steve said performing in the dark “will help visitors experience what it’s like to truly listen, so wrap up well, escape the madness of the commerciality of the season and disappear down the Victoria Tunnel for an hour, with complimentary mince pie and mulled wine.”

Santa will also be in residence in his grotto 55ft underground for a 1943-themed Christmas.
“The quality of our guides is brilliant and really brings the history to life,” said Clive.
“The tours are arranged and managed by the Ouseburn Trust and we are always looking for volunteers to train as guides.”
