CROWDS gathered in Whitley Bay to watch Spanish City become a festive attraction on Sunday as its Christmas lights were switched on.

People of all ages turned out to watch the big moment that the seaside town’s landmark was revealed in all its sparkling glory. The switch-on of the lights on a gigantic Christmas tree installed in Spanish City’s famous Dome was the first in the building’s long history.

And onlookers who braved the cold on Sunday evening weren’t disappointed.

There was a thoroughly festive atmosphere around the event and over the Christmas season the new decorations are set to prove yet another reason to visit Whitley Bay.

Spanish City has been a huge draw for families since the completion of its revamp this summer.

Its new cafes and restaurants have been popular with the upper level 1901 restaurant regularly fully-booked.

Many of Sunday’s spectators had gathered well before the official 5pm switch-on time and there was plenty seasonal goodwill to enjoy.

Entertainment included carol singers as well as mulled wine and mince pies. Father Christmas himself even made an appearance, to the delight of gathered children. And, adding to the feel-good spirit, the celebrations raised money for the charities CHUF - Children Heart Unit Fund - and Fishermen’s Mission.

The hope is that, following such a glittering success, the switch-on of the Spanish City lights will become a new festive tradition for North East families.
