A PRISONER is no longer fighting for his life in hospital after another inmate – his nephew – died in a North East jail.

Cowgate’s Richard Boyle was in a critical condition after falling into a coma after an incident at HMP Holme House.

However police say his condition is now “stable”.

The progress comes just days before his 41st birthday.

His nephew Simon Boyle died on Sunday morning.

He was serving a fiveyear sentence for brandishing a sawn-off shotgun during a garage raid.

An investigation is under way into the 31-year-old’s death.

Cleveland Police say the circumstances are currently “unexplained” and that the death was “sudden”.

Enquiries are being carried out, while a probe will also be held into the death.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Holme House prisoner Simon Boyle died in prison on December 2 2018. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

Holme House opened in May 1992 and is a large prison for holding male prisoners aged 18 years and over. According to the MoJ website, the population is mainly comprised of “longer sentenced determinate prisoners with a substantial number of remand prisoners”.

The prison serves primarily the communities of the Tees Valley, South West Durham, East Durham and North Yorkshire.

It can hold up to 1,210 inmates in a mixture of single and double cells.

As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation
