Four in court over armed Post Office robbery

FOUR people have appeared in court in connection with an armed robbery at an Northumber­land post office.

Robbers are believed to have escaped with almost £3,000 in cash following the raid at the Post Office on Humber Terrace, Ashington, on August 15.

Tony Eastlake, Adam Rae, Philip Wright and Allison Wright, all appeared at South East Northumber­land Magistrate­s’ Court in Bedlington. Philip Wright, 50, of Beatrice Street, Ashington, is charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and having an imitation firearm with intent.

Rae, 28, of Moorland Court, Bedlington, faced the same three counts and a charge of possessing a weapon in a public place.

Eastlake, 34, of Katherine Street, Ashington, appeared in court on his birthday charged with conspiring to commit robbery.

Wright, 47, also of Katherine Street, Ashington, faced the same charge in addition to one count of assisting an offender. No pleas were entered. Wright and Rae were remanded in custody, while Allison Wright and Eastlake were granted conditiona­l bail,

Chair of the bench Guy Reid sent the case to Newcastle Crown Court, and all four are due to appear on January 3.
