Two men in court accused of robbery at supermarket

-

TWO men have appeared in court accused with carrying out a robbery at an Asda supermarket.

The two defendants are accused of carrying out a raid at the supermarket in Stanley in the early hours of Saturday morning. Danny McGuire has been charged with robbery and Bryan Devonport has been charged with robbery and two counts of assaulting a police officer.

They appeared before magistrates in South Tyneside, where charges they faced in relation to an alleged carjacking in Washington were discontinued.

McGuire, 29, of Shelley Avenue, Washington and Devonport, 32, of Longhirst, Gateshead have both been remanded in custody, to appear before Newcastle Crown Court at a later date.

The alleged carjacking happened at 11.19pm on Friday, when police received a report of an attempted robbery at the Mill House roundabout, Washington.

A woman in a car said she was approached by two men who attempted to get inside. The uninjured woman managed to drive her Toyota away from the two men who approached her car.

Five minutes later, in a separate incident, a woman reported being approached at a set of traffic lights by two men.

She said she was then pulled out of the Vauxhall car before they drove away in it.

The victim suffered leg injuries after attempting to prevent the men from driving away. McGuire and Devonport were initially charged in relation to these incidents. Northumbria Police now say the investigation into the allegations is ongoing.
