PIC: STEVE MILLER ENTRIES are now open for the annual Heartscan Morpeth Harriers New Year’s Day Road Race.

The race, which covers approximately 11 kilometres, will get under way at 1.00 on January 1 at the bottom of Dogger Bank in Morpeth.

It wil then follow its usual attractive route through nearby Mitford and Mitford Steads, then along the Whalton Road. The race then returns to Morpeth, entering Carlisle Park, following the Promenade and finally reaching the finish line on the Stanners.

Last year saw the host club record a double victory, Ross Floyd and Jane Hodgson claiming the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

The 2019 event is being sponsored for the first time by Heartscan, a Newcastle-based heart screening specialist run by FA-approved cardiologist Dr Antoinette Kenny.

Heartscan provides sports screening services to Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC and Durham County Cricket Club as well as amateur athletes.

Thanks to the sponsorship, the first 200 finishers of the race will receive a commemorative water bottle.

Online entry is available at www. racenumber.co.uk until midnight on December 27 at rates of £7 for club members and £9 for non-affiliated athletes.

Registration and late entry on race day (£10/£12) will be available from 11.30 to 12.30 at race headquarters at Morpeth Rugby Club, Mitford Road, Morpeth, NE61 1RJ.
