Mulhern has a first victory to celebrate

- By MARK CARRUTHERS

WHITLEY Bay secured the first win of manager Mick Mulhern’s reign as they eased past Ryhope CW in the Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup.

The Seahorses fell behind on three minutes as former North Shields and Newcastle Benfield striker Jack Devlin opened the scoring for the hosts.

Two goals in four minutes from Stephen Ramsey and Andrei Ardelean turned the tie on its head and Mulhern’s side took a two-goal advantage into half-time thanks to Ardelean’s second of the night.

Both sides had chances to add to the scoring in the second-half but the visitors had already done enough to progress into the quarter-finals.

Consett came out on top in an entertaining affair with a 4-2 win against Bishop Auckland.

The two sides were level at the break as Steelman defender Ross Wilkinson cancelled out an earlier strike from Michael Hoganson.

Michael Mackay put the hosts ahead for the first time in the game just before the hour mark, but Hoganson restored parity from the penalty spot on 71 minutes.

However, it is Consett who progressed into the last eight thanks to Wilkinson’s second goal of the game and a late strike from Michael Sweet.

Heaton Stannington won the all-Division Two tie with a 2-1 win at Chester-le-Street Town.

The Stan took a first-half lead with a well-taken goal from Joe Kerridge but Jack Oliver pulled the Cestrians back on level terms on 70 minutes.

Andrew Robertson looked to have won it for the visitors when he scored two minutes from time, only for Oliver’s second of the night to send the tie into a penalty shoot-out.

Both sides were struck by nerves with several misses from the spot but it was the Cestrians who progressed with a 3-2 success in the shoot-out. ■■FIRST-HALF efforts from Sam Walker and Matthew Warburton put National League North play-off chasers Spennymoor Town on their way to a National League North defeat against Stockport County.

Stephen Brogan pulled one back for the Moors in the second half but the Hatters secured the win with an injury-time goal from former Gateshead striker Nyal Bell.
