United weigh up an offer for ace Almiron

- By LEE RYDER AND MARK DOUGLAS

NEWCASTLE United remain around the table with Atlanta United over a deal for Miguel Almiron – but they have yet to make a concrete offer for the playmaker’s services.

Talk a deal will be completed “within hours” came via the player’s father.

However, while the Magpies are still very interested in Almiron, there is still some distance to go before a deal is agreed.

What is certain is managingdirector Lee Charnley is talking to the MLS winners as the two clubs try to come to an agreement in good time for January 1.

Atlanta’s stance on selling Almiron has not changed and Darren Eales, the club’s supremo, said: “Unless it is something which is a really serious offer we will not consider it.”

Eales also confirmed there had been “no” bids for Almiron yet, so the transfer is still very much at the discussion stage.

Rafa Benitez is still expected to bring in up to four new faces in the January window with backing still said to be available despite the ongoing takeover talk.

Yet the Spaniard is waiting to see how much the club will stretch to when the winter shopping period opens for business.

United’s scouting reports for Almiron have been glowing about the skilful forward’s workrate, Benitez convinced the Paraguay international could make an instant impact in the Premier League if a move is sanctioned.

Newcastle have scouted Almiron extensively and Benitez sees him as a good fit at the right age for a key role in his team.

As well as his technical ability, scouting reports filed by the Magpies have emphasised he is excellent off the ball, which is one of the reasons Benitez is so keen to add him.

United have been heavily linked with the player and a scouting trip by Steve Nickson recently convinced the player’s camp that Newcastle are serious about their interest.

The player is understood to be interested in working with Rafa Benitez and understands Newcastle would offer him a huge platform and first-team football after his MLS Cup win with Atlanta United.

Almiron has said he will return to the January pre-season training camp.

Much will now come down to how Newcastle approach the transfer window with uncertainty swirling around the club.
