Fear end 2018 on a roll after medal success
TYNE and Fear are ready to roll in 2019 - after enjoying a successful end to the year.
The Newcastle-based squad gained its best-ever ranking - 10th at the World Championships in Salem, Oregon.
It followed that with a creditable bronze medal at the Men’s European Cup event on Tyneside.
Tyne and Fear was one of five European teams at the Worlds - the others Southern Discomfort (London), Manchester Roller Derby, Toulouse Roller Derby and Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder.
They went into the tournament ranked 14th in the world and lost their opening match against sixthranked Vancouver Murder 239-147.
Next up were 13th-ranked Denver, the lead swapping continuously before the Geordie lads secured a 216-176 victory.
In their final match, Tyne and Fear took on Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder.
The Tyneside lads had already played Lincolnshire twice this year, the score at one win apiece.
However, this time the Thunder stormed to a 243-143 success.
The tournament was a massive success and Tyne and Fear came away ranked 10th in the world - the best ranking they have had since becoming established in 2010.
The team wishes to thank sponsor United British Caravans for their generous donation and family and friends’ contributions to enable them to compete in Salem.
Tyne and Fear then hosted the annual Men’s European Cup at Newcastle’s Walker Activity Dome.
Ten teams from across Europe took part in the two-day competition - Manneken Beasts (Belguim), Gothenburg Salty Seaman, MadRiders (Spain), Helsinki Coast Quads, Glasgow Mens Roller Derby, Barrow Infernos, Southern Discomfort, Manchester Roller Derby, Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder and Tyne and Fear.
Tyne and Fear again battled it out against Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder for the bronze medal, coming out on top 239-170.
The final was between Southern Discomfort and Manchester Roller Derby, Discomfort taking home the gold medals for a fourth year in a row.
Tyne and Fear are on the lookout for new recruits for 2019.
