Festive cheer for everyone
FOR people faced with homelessness, mental and physical illness, and other life-altering challenges, Christmas can be a challenging time.
But in this quiet corner of Newcastle, 100 people with tough lives were given a few hours to relax and enjoy a proper Christmas celebration. There were smiles all round at the Christmas lunch at Vinnie’s, at Blackfriars, Ouseburn, on Tuesday.
Those supported by the service were invited to enjoy three sumptuous courses, and walk away with Christmas gifts of chocolates and warm winter clothes.
But perhaps more important was the community spirit that filled the hall. With Christmas songs and carols being sung, lively conversations and time to connect with others, people were able to enjoy a taste of festive spirit.
Fundraiser and volunteer coordinator, Emma Bell, said: “We are just trying to make it a bit extra special for some of those who won’t have many people around at Christmas.”
She thanked the “amazing” team of volunteers who had cooked and served the lunch, as well as offering a listening ear to those that needed it, and the charity’s supporters.
Children from St Mary’s RC Primary School, in Whickham, added to the fun by serenading diners with Christmas carols.
Brother Andrew, a Dominican friar from the church which runs Vinnie’s, added: “Christmas is a time of great significance for families and a terrible time to be alone, so it’s great to be able to throw a big party to welcome people.
“Not just to give them food but to give them time to talk, to have a relationship, time to feel like they’re welcomed by the community and time hopefully to let them know that they’re welcomed and loved by God who became a baby at this time of year.”
