Our climate is facing real threat

-

THREE years ago representatives from every country in the world met in Paris to sign a protocol to promise to try and mitigate the effects of global warming/climate change.

Recently the United Nations sponsored a meeting in Katowice, Poland, to review progress. The result was not unsurprising. Among the delegates was Sir David Attenborough, 92, a worried biologist, who pointed out how endangered both civilisation and wildlife would be if nothing was done to reduce the noxious emissions of carbon dioxide and methane – two of the worst offenders.

Delegates spoke at length of lengthy droughts, the destruction caused by extended hurricane seasons, rising sea-levels and the ill effects such phenomena would have on world food supplies.

After all there are seven billion human mouths to feed. The World Bank stated that it is setting aside £200 million to deal with the situation.

Yet inspite of all this publicity, there is an element of the population that will not concede that global warming/ climate change is taking place.

The science is straight forward – carbon dioxide and methane (especially) retain heat. Add to that, acid rain on people, buildings and our seas and rivers, plus devastating, widespread forest fires.

I am reminded of the old age, “there are none so blind as those who will not see.”
