George is star Tern at Royal ceremony
YACHTING
GEORGE Ternent from Alnmouth was among 57 people presented with one of the Royal Yachting Association’s most prestigious awards by RYA president The Princess Royal at a special ceremony in London.
At an official dinner and presentation at One Great George Street, Westminster, Ternent received an RYA Award for Lifetime Commitment in recognition of his dedication to the River Aln Boat Club.
Ternent was a founder member of the club in 1977 and has been involved ever since, both on shore - working with the committee and to improve facilities - and on the water.
He organises the club’s dinghy racing and RNLI fundraising events and has introduced many people to sailing - including his own children and grandchildren and new members through the club’s annual Push the Boat Out open day.
Ternent said: “The ceremony went really well and the Princess Royal was so friendly.
“She asked me about the club. It was a lovely day.”
RYA Director of Sport Development, Alistair Dickson said: “The RYA Volunteer Awards, sometimes known as the MBEs of our sport, recognise the outstanding contributions made by volunteers nationwide.
“It has been a fantastic opportunity to say thank you to the people who go above and beyond, giving that little bit extra to ensure others can enjoy the sport we all love.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of boating and it is an honour to reward their efforts and give something back.”
