Youngster Longstaff in line for more game time against Hornets

-

SEAN Longstaff is in contention for more Premier League minutes against Watford today, writes LEE RYDER.

The 21-year-old made his top-flight bow for Newcastle away to Liverpool and is likely to be at least on the bench at Vicarage Road with Ki on international duty with South Korea and Jonjo Shelvey injured.

Longstaff must wait to see if he gets the nod ahead of Isaac Hayden for the clash with the Hornets.

Speaking to the Chronicle he said: “Hopefully there’s another opportunity at Watford.

“If not I will keep working hard and see what happens.

“For me to get on at Anfield and play at one of the most iconic stadiums in the world is unbelievable.

“I was over the moon about my debut on Boxing Day but the result is disappointing and it was a bittersweet day.”

Longstaff has had to wait patiently for his chance with the first team after spending most of the season in the second string but opportunities could come thick and fast now.

United take on Watford next before the small matter of Manchester United at St James’ Park on January 2.

The midfielder will almost certainly be in with a chance of starting the FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers on third round day.

With Rafa Benitez short on midfielders, Longstaff could also be one of the first names on the team sheet for the eagerly anticipated Checkatrade Trophy derby game at the Stadium of Light in early January.

After fighting his way to the first team, when asked if he would be prepared to be one of the more senior players in United’s Checkatrade game, Longstaff said: “It’s a weird one.

“Whenever you get the chance to play against Sunderland you want to grasp the opportunity but it’s not down to me.

“I’d play in every game I can.”
