Armstrong is hoping for a double swoop

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans’ manager Alun Armstrong has lined up two new recruits to help his side kick on in the New Year.

Spartans face a promotion six-pointer at local rivals Spennymoor Town this afternoon in eighth position.

They ended 2018 in fantastic style with eight wins and two draws – and Armstrong wants to strike while the iron is hot.

Two four-figure festive attendances have increased the optimism, although both Spennymoor and York brought a decent away following.

Armstrong will be delighted if they can keep the unbeaten run going at Spennymoor but is looking at the bigger picture.

He said: “I have been knocking on the chairman’s door to see if I can strengthen the squad.

“If we can continue to get crowds of 1,100 then the chairman might give me a bit of money to fund signings.

“To win eight games and draw the other two in the last 10 games is phenomenal but the squad is not the biggest.

“I have a couple of lads sitting ready who will strengthen us massively and help us to get where I want to take the club.

“Unfortunately they are not cheap when you have the likes of Spennymoor and Darlington on your door step.

“We cannot compete with them financially, or even with South Shields, but I would love to get the two of them in this month.”

A crowd of more than 1,000 is expected at the Brewery Field today as Blyth attempt to remain on an upward trajectory.
