MORE than £5,000 has been raised so far in donations to bring tragic Consett backpacker Luke Ramage home from Thailand.

The doting dad-of-two was found dead in a hotel in the red light district of Bangkok at the age of just 31.

Luke arrived in Thailand with friends on December 13 just days before his death.

The circumstances surrounding Luke’s death still remain unknown.

The unexpected death has left Luke’s family scrambling to raise the cash needed to bring their loved one home.

Grieving mum Kathleen Rowell says a total of £10,000 is needed to fly Luke home and to pay for a funeral. And just days after sister Emily set up a GoFundMe page, generous donors have already contributed more than half of the total needed.

Nurse Kathleen, 50, said: “People have been so supportive and we are so grateful.

“At the moment he is half way around the world.

“Luke was so proud so he probably would not like to ask for charity, but we have no other option.

“It would mean the world to us, it would allow us to grieve. “I want to be able to see him and I think it would finally hit home.” Dubbed the “boys on tour”, Luke’s six-week trip to Thailand was the realisation of one of his long-term dreams – but the dream trip soon turned into a nightmare. Kathleen received the devastating news on December 15, and faces an agonising wait for a post-mortem examination report to tell her how her son died.

She finished: “If I had the money I would go over. “It does make it harder not knowing why.”
