Chubby is back to chew the fat at Fed Brewery

- BY SIMON DUKE

ROY ‘Chubby’ Brown is back in the region for another show on Tyneside 18 months after his Newcastle gig was pulled for being too blue.

Never one to be discouraged, the controversial comedian is set to appear at the Lancastrian Suite at Gateshead’s Federation Brewery on Friday, January 18.

Brown was set to play Newcastle City Hall in April last year but in July 2017, the Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust took the decision to cancel his appearance, after they took over management of the famous venue.

The Trust cancelled Brown’s gig due to his “unpleasant, crude and offensive” act.

The decision left the comic disappointed as he likened it to a divorce, saying: “I’ve done so well over the years and playing City Hall has been the pinnacle,” he said. “It’s like a divorce with them telling me sorry, we don’t love you anymore.”

The Teesside-born comic, now 72, is known for his racy content and disregard for political correctness, which, as well as rubbing people up the wrong way, has built him a loyal following among his fans.

And because of his no-holdsbarred approach to comedy, his television appearances are rare so those who enjoy his stand-up often have to wait for his live performances.

The strictly over-18 gig at the Lancastrian Suite in Dunston, will open with an as yet unnamed support act.

Tickets are £20 and are available at www.thelancastriansuite.com
