No half measures as Spartans’ boss lines up cover in defence

- By JEFF BOWRON

BLYTH Spartans hope to offset the departure of Aaron Cunningham with the return of another centrehalf, David Atkinson.

Manager Alun Armstrong had hoped to extend Cunningham’s halfseason loan from Hartlepool United but was unsuccessful.

Blyth take on National League side Boreham Wood in the second round of the the FA Trophy at Croft Park tomorrow.

Cunningham’s departure has left the Spartans with just two recognised centre-halves, Nathan Buddle and Jordan Watson.

Armstrong has an iron in the fire regarding another central defender and is optimistic Atkinson will rejoin the club on loan.

The former Carlisle full-back is plying his trade in Iceland, Armstrong hoping he will be able to play for Blyth during their off-season.

Armstrong said: “Getting Atkinson back on loan would be a massive boost as he has done very well for us in the past.

“I am also hopeful we can bring in another centre-back but it is all down to finances and whether the board will sanction deals.

“We are in a good position in the league to strengthen, so hopefully that will turn out to be the case. Making further progress in the FA Trophy will bring in further finance, though it will be a tough tie against Boreham Wood.

“Brackley from our league won the Trophy last year so it shows anything is possible - we just have to bring our A game to the table.”

Armstrong hopes to have a full squad to select from apart from long-term absentee Ryan Hutchinson.
