Coast is clear as seafront homes set to go on sale

PROGRESS is being made on the construction of new homes along a seafront.

The properties, including 10 luxury townhouses and two apartments, are being developed on the former Avenue Hotel site, near the Spanish City Dome, in Whitley Bay.

The pub had been empty for years and became an eyesore before North Tyneside Council bought the building and demolished it in 2015.

Plans were then drawn up for new houses on the land and construction work started last year.

The development has been named Empress Point, after the old Empress Ballroom once part of the Spanish City complex.

It will include three- and four-bedroom townhouses, as well as a ground floor apartment and maisonette, on the corner of Park Avenue and Brook Street.

The council says the building’s roof and windows will be fitted in the coming weeks, and the work is on schedule to be complete this summer.

The homes, being developed by Aurora Properties on behalf of the council, will go on sale later this month. They are being built by Kier Services.

North Tyneside Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “This is an important site in the heart of the Whitley Bay regeneration area.

“This development will offer highquality homes in a prime location, nestled between our picturesque seafront and the centre of town, making it a very desirable place to live.

“The choice of name is also a very fitting reminder of the glory days of Whitley Bay, which are flooding back as we speak.”
