PLANS for a huge new development to bring a Wallsend golf club into the 21st century have been unveiled.

Centurion Park could soon become home to the first UK branch of US firm ‘Big Shots,’ a chain of golf centres which combine traditional with digital activities.

As well as hitting a ball for real, customers will be able to ‘play’ on the world’s best golf courses using digital video technology.

Early proposals for a two-storey building and 300m range at Centurion Park have been put together, the first of ten which could be built across the UK.

The new business will also be home to a training academy with PGA-accredited coaches, a restaurant and bar and a golf shop.

If approved, the development will also see the existing golf course reconfigured to “shorten its length slightly” in order to make space for the new development.

Chris Sanderson, the businessman behind the development, said: “It’s an incredible coup for the North East with so much to offer everyone at all ages from existing golfers, families of all ages, schools, universities and for example corporate days out.

“It’s a chance to get the game of golf as one of the top sporting and fun choices.”

PGA professional Phil Harrison, who is also involved with the plans, said: “Centurion Park is a perfect fit.

“It’s a well located, existing location that we are planning to turn into the most exciting golf centre and interactive driving range in the UK.

“It will appeal to kids, families and golfers of every level and experience.”

Planning applications will be formally submitted in March/April.
