- MARK CARRUTHERS

EVO-STIK NPL Premier Division promotion chasers South Shields dropped points for the second consecutive game after they were beaten at Grantham Town.

After an even first half-hour it was the hosts that went ahead with a goal from Jordan Adebayo-Smith on 36 minutes.

Luke Daly got the Mariners back on level-terms with his first goal for the club with 17 minutes remaining.

But it was the Gingerbreads that snatched the points as Adebayo-Smith rounded off a quick counter-attack just two minutes after Daly’s equaliser.

Northern League Division One sides Whitley Bay, Newcastle Benfield and West Auckland Town all progressed into the semi-finals of the Mitre Brooks Mileson Memorial Cup.

An injury-time penalty from Craig McFarlane helped Whitley Bay past Division One rivals Newton Aycliffe. Andrei Ardelean put Whitley ahead with a crisp, low drive just after the half-hour mark but they were pegged back on 63 minutes as Jermaine Metz fired past Bay keeper Ross Logan.

There was late drama as Whitley were awarded an injurytime penalty as midfielder Ryan Redford was brought down in the area by Aycliffe keeper James Winter. Craig McFarlane stepped up a calmly stroked the ball home to send his side through.
