SuperKev back at the Stadium of Light... and able to enjoy it

- By CRAIG JOHNS

KEVIN Phillips is looking forward to watching Sunderland as a fan on Friday evening, rather than as an employee of the opposition.

It’s been 16 years since Phillips departed Sunderland a hero and yet he believes Friday’s League One clash with Accrington Stanley will only be the second time he’s returned to the Stadium of Light purely as a supporter.

Having continued his playing career until 2014, the Black Cats great then went straight into coaching after he retired and he’s also done media work from time to time.

But having left Stoke City last month along with manager Gary Rowett, Phillips will host a talk with supporters in the Black Cats Bar on Friday evening before being able to relax and enjoy the game. He told the Chronicle: “I’m really looking forward to coming and seeing a game. I think at the start of the season there was a lot of anticipation with how they would do in League One and I was no different.

“I’m really pleased, but I wouldn’t say surprised, that they are where they are and they have the opportunity they’ve got with the games coming up. They’re in a good position still as we approach the runin. It’s always nice to come back on a personal level. This will be my first chance this season and it’s always nice. The fans have always been good to me.

“I think I’ve only ever been once as a spectator since I left the club as I’ve only ever been as a player or coach of the opposition or on media duties. It will be nice to relax and just enjoy the game.”
