City staff at college at time of stabbing

A NUMBER of Newcastle Sixth Form College staff were at the Birmingham college where a stabbing took place this week, it has been confirmed.

The staff had been visiting Joseph Chamberlai­n Sixth Form College when the incident unfolded on Wednesday.

A teenager has been charged with attempted murder and another is in a critical condition in hospital after the disturbanc­e shortly after 4pm, the Birmingham Mail reports.

A spokespers­on for Newcastle Sixth Form College said the staff did not witness the incident and had returned safely to Newcastle.

West Midlands Police said: “A 16-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of a teenager near Joseph Chamberlai­n College on Wednesday (February 13).

“Police were called to a disturbanc­e near the college on Belgrave Road, just after 4pm where a 16-year-old boy was found with a serious stab wound to his chest.

“The youngster, who attends the college, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

“A 19-year-old man was left with minor cuts to his back and his hand, while an 18-year-old man was also treated for a cut to his hand.

“The accused was arrested soon after and charged in the early hours of today.

“He also faces two charges of wounding and one of possession of an offensive weapon.

“He has further been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, following an incident on 19 December last year in Southacre Road, Highgate, where a man was stabbed in the wrist.

“He is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrate­s’ Court today.”
