Man arrested after Aldi is targeted by raider
A MAN has been arrested a week after an attempted armed robbery at an Aldi supermarket.
At about 6.35am on Wednesday February 13, police received a report a man carrying a gun had broken in to the Aldi on Stamfordham Road in Westerhope.
It was reported that the man had disabled the store’s CCTV cameras before breaking in but was fought off by staff who were inside. They tried to detain him but the intruder became violent and escaped, leaving behind his shoe, a hat and the firearm.
On Tuesday night a 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with the aggravated burglary.
Det Sgt Philip Thoburn said: “Our investigation into this incident will continue and we would still appeal to anyone with information to get in touch with police. If you saw anything or if you think you know who might have been involved, we would like to hear from you as it could greatly assist our investigation.
“This was a particularly frightening incident for all those involved and again I would like to commend the staff for their bravery in trying to detain the offender.”
