Cain proves able

STEVEN Cain’s four goals helped the Highwayman to their first Premier Division win of the season in a 6-4 thriller with Blue Star.

The other goals came from Edward Little and Liam Fiddes, while Robert Houghton, James Bowman, Lee Turnbull and Evan Peareth all found the net for Blue Star.

Thomas Wilson moved up to second place when they went goal crazy against Sheriff Hill Three Tuns, winning 5-0.

Alan Mulholland bagged a brace, with Ricky Fenwick, Sam Fraser and Jordan Fraser also on target.

Stormont Main and Birtley The Hanlon played out a 1-1 draw with James Turnbull registerin­g for Stormont Main, and Callum Turnbull hitting the net for The Hanlon.

Whickham Bay Horse returned from Holmeside with all three points thanks to their 5-2 victory in Division One.

Ryan Cowan scored twice for Bay Horse, with Peter Grugan, Lee Robinson and Kane Swaddle all getting on the scoresheet­s. Dan Freeman scored both goals for Holmeside.

James McRoy opened the scoring for Leam Rangers in their 5-1 win against Gateshead Three Tuns.

Anthony Huddart added two second-half goals, one coming from a header before he then added a penalty to make it 3-0.

The Tuns pulled one back through Rhys Jukes, but they were unfortunat­e to score two own goals, to complete their misery.

Leam Lane WMC made easy work of an away tie at Stanley Oxhill Central, winning 10-0 in the quarterfin­als of the North West Durham Charity Cup.

Connor Halpin scored five himself, and there were two from Gordon Hutchinson. Also adding their names to the scoresheet were Joe Mole, Jonathan Hirst and Carl Taylor, who scored a penalty.

Whickham Coachman were made to work harder for their semi-final spot but overcame Newton Aycliffe Navy Club 2-0, thanks to goals from Simon Hay and Matty Baldwin.

Saltwell SC crashed out via a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw with East Stanley.

The visitors opened the scoring before Meechack Kanda equalized for Saltwell.

Stanley regained the lead but goals from Luke Steel and Zadjo Kendjo put Saltwell in front.

With only seven minutes remaining, East Stanley scored to send the tie to penalties. ■ The Gateshead League are now inviting applicatio­ns from teams wishing to join the league for the start of next season. Any interested teams should make contact with the league secretary.
