Betham’s sweet 16 in victory

-

WHITLEY Tomahawks picked up a comfortable 9-2 victory when Solihull Barons came north for an English Under-15 North Division Two encounter.

The result keeps the Tomahawks up with the title-chasing pack.

The home side was given a player advantage as early as 20 seconds into the game when Solihull were penalised for a late hit - but could not take advantage.

The Tomahawks went ahead 39 seconds after the penalty had expired when Matthew Betham scored unassisted.

The home side had to wait a further five minutes before they could add to their tally and it came from Owen Yarrow, with an assist going to James Toby.

The hosts’ third goal came when they were short-handed as Yarrow was sitting out a 2+10 for Boarding and Betham struck unassisted for his 16th goal of the season.

There was still time for the Tomahawks to add another before the first period had ended, Owen Curry feeding Toby at 12.11 for a 4-0 firstperiod lead.

The home side found itself on the powerplay at 16.18 when the Barons were penalised for a delaying of the game penalty and from the resulting face-off Curry struck from a Betham pass for 5-0 at 16.25.

Tomahawks’ netminder Jamie Ryan was in fine form in keeping the visitors at bay and maintaining a clean sheet.

The fifth Tomahawks goal duly came from Bailey Stone as he notched his second goal of the season at 24.30.

Curry’s second strike of the game and 14th goal of the season came with the final period just 62 seconds old.

Ryan soon had his shut-out broken as the visitors’ opening goal came from the restart ten seconds later at 31.12.

A second counter for the visitors followed at 33.31, Maksims Fomins the goalscorer.

Yarrow drove home his second goal of the game and 18th of the season unassisted at 36.36.

The scoring was completed with a little under five minutes still remaining with Toby’s second effort of the game and of the season.
