Moss is on track for a silver as Northumbri­a shine at Sheffield

NORTHUMBRI­A Sport celebrated a haul of medals at the annual BUCS Nationals in Sheffield, writes OSCAR MAUNG-HALEY.

Northumbri­a competed in athletics, judo, karate and swimming.

In athletics, they were able to secure a silver medal in the women’s 200m final thanks to the efforts of Jazmine Moss.

Moss, who ran an outstandin­g time of 24.35 in the final, was pipped to the gold medal by University of Nottingham’s Hayley Mills, who managed to break the BUCS record during the race. Jack Roach claimed fourth place in the men’s long jump.

Northumbri­a clinched three medals in karate.

Rory Kavanagh was the standout performer, securing a gold medal in the men’s individual category which meant he also retained his BUCS Sport title.

Courtney Morris and Muhammed Alfarhan both took bronze medals in their respective discipline­s.

Judo also proved to be fruitful for Northumbri­a’s medal prospects, Mark Faulkner winning a silver in the men’s over-100 kgs category.

There were also gongs for James Robinson and Isaac Mason in the under-66kgs and under-73 kgs categories respective­ly.

However, the performanc­es of the weekend came from Northumbri­a’s swimmers.

They splashed out on six medals four golds and two silvers - led by Paralympic swimmers Takayuki Suzuki and Claire Cashmore.
