Watched Longstaff in training is surprised by success – Hayden

-

pair have kept their places in Rafa Benitez’s starting 11.

Both men have gained plaudits from their manager, journalists, and supporters for their team work and effort, and many feel it would be difficult to drop them.

Longstaff scored his first Premier League goal against Burnley earlier this week, which was part of yet another rounded performance by the academy graduate. Hayden, who has been open about his desire to leave United and move closer to his family down south, has spoken highly about the midfielder.

“It was massive,” he replied when asked about Longstaff’s goal against Burnley.

“He’s a top lad. He’s so, so humble. He’s so gracious in the way that he plays, so calm on the ball for his age.

“I think back to when I was 21. I know I was playing quite a bit, but that was in the Championship, and that’s a completely different level of football.

“For me, he’s been fantastic since he’s come in.

“I think people saw in pre-season what he was about.

“He’s got given the chance and he’s taken it, which is credit to him and his family.”

Thanks to the victory over Burnley, United now lie six points above the relegation zone. With the Clarets in great form, many would have taken a point but Hayden says United showed their class to get themselves all three points.

“It didn’t feel easy. It was very tough – long balls, second balls.

“We knew exactly what they’d be like.

“I think they’re a good side, but we showed our class, especially on the ball.”
