RGS are Quick to impress in City Cup final

A right Royal celebration as squad sees off Manor

-

ROYAL Grammar School successsfully defended the Quickfall Under19 City Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory against Heaton Manor.

RGS started on the front foot and took an early lead.

Ethan Heardman found space in the box and slotted the ball home for the opening goal.

RGS kept up the pace and it was no surprise when David Kusi backheeled the ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble.

Heaton Manor were under constant pressure and struggling to get out of their own half at this stage.

With ten minutes to go in the first half, however, Heaton finally got into the game.

Firstly, Mario Carangelo screwed a good chance wide.

Then Jacob Dalglish shot into the midriff of Elliot Ashton-Edminson in the RGS goal. Just before half-time, Carangelo found himself in space on the left of the goal.

However, his shot was easily saved by Ashton-Edminson.

Heaton started the second period in the same frame of mind as the end of the first and pushed RGS back towards to their own goal.

The pressure nearly paid off when Jamie MacFayden’s spectacular overhead kick crashed against the bar and bounced to safety.

RGS then went up the other end and made it 3-0 when Heardman finished off from close range.

Heaton went close again when MacFayden just missed out on a cross at the back post.

Heaton then hit the bar through Jay Armstrong but RGS still created their own chances, Greg Rein latching on to a through ball - but Hisham El Edrissi rushed out of his goal to save it.

In the end RGS were worthy winners as they lifted the cup for a fourth successive season.
