A HEALTH scare forced his family to fly halfway across the world for urgent check-ups.

But the grin on little Kian Musgrove’s face is that of a young boy who now knows he’s still cancer-free.

Kian has been fighting the disease since he was just 18 months old, when he was diagnosed with aggressive neuroblastoma, for which his family had to fundraise for pioneering treatment in America.

The brave battler, from Prudhoe, Northumberland, now six, was over the moon when his treatment came to an end in January last year.

But Kian and his family still face the terrifying prospect of a relapse.

A recent period of ill health raised fears that the little lad could be taking ill again.

And on February 24, Kian’s mum Kat announced to his followers on Facebook that the family had made a sudden trip to New York for follow-up treatment and scans.

Kian was treated again at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, where he had previously received the specialist care which cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. And after a gruelling round of tests, Kian himself was able to announce good news to all his online well-wishers.

On the Caring for Kian Facebook page, he wrote: “Hi everyone. This is my most special friend Dr Kushner.

“I have been to see him and he told me some great news. He told me that all of my scans look good.

“He said it’s good to continue scans and tests every three months to make sure there is no cancer returning. “He said it is always best to make sure in case it does return so we can treat it sooner rather than later. “Thank you so much Dr Kushner [from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre]. I love you lots and lots.”

The family is continuing to fundraise for the costs of Kian’s treatment and checkups, with just one scan in the US hospital setting them back as much as $10,000.

And the support from their community has been overwhelming.

Newcastle travel agents Dawson and Sanderson funded Kian’s flight out to the US, while donations flooded in to help pay for treatment.

Kat told her followers: “Thank you so much for your care and kind donations

“It all helps to fund each and every appointment, blood test, scan, accommodation, and flights back and forth.”

And to make a nerve-wracking flight slightly easier for Kian, British Airways staff even invited the youngster into the cockpit to meet the pilots.

“It really does mean so much,” mum Kat added.
